Walking is an easy and feasible starting point for developing the habit of regular physical activity in daily life. Studies indicate walking can enhance muscle and bone strength, lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, and other health issues. Additionally, it may boost mental well-being and help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Adults are recommended to gradually increase their daily step goal to 10,000 based on individual’s own physical conditions, abilities, pace and circumstances. Even if the goal cannot be reached yet, any amount of walking is better than sitting.
The Health Bureau and the Department of Health will organise “10,000 Steps a Day Walking Challenge” with the slogan of” Shall We Walk and Talk” in November 2024, with the goal to raise awareness of the physical and mental health benefits of walking, encourage friends and colleagues to support each other and walk 10,000 steps a day.
